Elementary Educator for 2021-2022 School Year 

 

The Bellwether School is looking for a teacher for our 4/5/6th grade multi-age classroom who believes that math and poetry can hold the secret to the universe, describes themselves as an adventurer, and is a lover of the arts. 

 

About the Position: 

Working in a multi-age class of diverse learners, the elementary teacher will be responsible for designing and assessing all aspects of curriculum – literacy, math, science, social studies, and social emotional learning. Demonstrated leadership skills and confidence to take on the challenge of creating broad-based learning opportunities including experience with integrating project and field-based opportunities across core subjects is required.

  • Exhibit the highest standards of professionalism while consistently demonstrating excitement about learning, being part of a team, growing from mistakes, and recognizing the variety of strengths individuals bring to experiences; 

  • Communicate frequently and effectively with diverse audiences – students, colleagues, families, administration, and community organizations; 

  • Create curricula that are responsive to the interests and experiences of students that is project based, hands on, and allows for students to develop awareness of how to manage their own learning;  

  • Implement curricula via daily instruction that provides varied opportunities for individualized learning, including scaffolding curriculum to meet the needs of diverse learners and provides guidance for both social emotional and intellectual growth.

  • Proven track record of strong student relations, developing partnerships with parents and committed to collaboration and being a team player; 

  • A deep understanding of child development and is passionate about progressive and holistic education and strength-based approach to learning; 

  • Competent, compassionate and flexible in providing an inclusive and positive environment for all types of learners; 

  • Demonstrated experience in developing an integrated, interdisciplinary curriculum that nurtures students’ social, emotional, physical and intellectual growth; 

  • Love of the natural world and advocate for students’ need for play, movement, and time outside; 

  • Experience compiling and presenting documentation of authentic assessment in Portfolio and Narrative formats;

  • Effective written and oral communicator; 

  • Innovative and optimistic life-long learner with a growth mindset. 

 

Education and Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (ex: Education, Environmental Science, Math, English, History, etc.); 

  • Understanding of principles, philosophy, and practices in child development. 

  • At least one year of experience leading a classroom. Minimum of three years teaching experience at the elementary level;  

  • Experience in independent schools and/or alternative learning environments a plus.

Afterschool Coordinator

 

The Bellwether School, a holistic education community and non-profit organization, is looking for a new Afterschool Coordinator for our multi-age Pre-K and Elementary Afterschool Program. The successful candidate will be committed to working as a collaborative member of a teaching team in a holistic educational environment.  Additionally, applicants should have experience with this age group in a classroom setting and experience developing engaging activities.  

 

The Bellwether School is a private school located in Williston, Vermont. We have four multi-age classrooms serving students ages 3 to 12 years. Our school embraces philosophies from a tradition of progressive and holistic education including leading educational experts such as John Dewey, Ron Miller, Maria Montessori, and the ideas from the Reggio Emilia schools. It is our mission to create a learning community that engages and honors children, preparing them to be responsible citizens.

 

About the Position: 

 

The Afterschool Coordinator designs and facilitates afterschool care and activities for students aged preschool through sixth grade.

 

Each week they organize equitable activities following Bellwether’s seven domains of learning, as well as   a holistic approach to education. Work with the Bellwether teachers to deliver a successful transition from the regular school day to the afterschool program.

 

The Ideal candidate will:

 

  • Quality of mind, passion for teaching, and commitment to the education of children.

  • Ability and commitment to work collaboratively within a team and to communicate effectively with parents. 

  • Orientation to holistic philosophy and teaching methods.

  • Bachelor’s degree related to early childhood or elementary teaching & child development (preferred).

  • Classroom experience at the early childhood level (preferred).

  • Experience in teaching an integrated, emergent curriculum a strong plus.

  • Friendly demeanor, sense of humor, high standards, and flexibility.

 

Desired Qualities

 

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Early Childhood, Elementary Education or experience in a related field.

  • Certification in First Aid and Youth/Adult CPR

 

  • Ability to relate positively and sensitively to children, parents, and staff.

  • Evidence of emotional maturity and stability to use classroom supervision constructively.

  • Evidence of sufficient security and judgment to handle crisis situations.

  • Ability to recognize and to record significant observations and data.

  • Physical stamina.

  • Understanding and ability to follow up to date COVID-19 protocols.
